Holy Week in Antigua Guatemala with Elizabeth Bell 2015

Explore the most spectacular time of the year in Antigua with the largest celebration for Semana Santa in the world! Expert Elizabeth Bell, author of “Lent and Holy Week in Antigua”, offers special tours beginning Palm Sunday through Saturday. Highlights include tips on enjoying this very special holiday, carpet making, processions in Antigua and a special Wednesday tour to San Mateo Milpas Altas. Each day offers different tours!

Palm Sunday Tour March 29th 9:30am –12:00pm

Meet Elizabeth Bell at the Antigua Tours Park office inside Casa del Conde bookstore/cafe for a guided walk as Holy Week begins with grandeur. We see carpets made at their best and watch the Palm Sunday La Merced procession, providing helpful tips for getting around the busy streets of Antigua during this season.

$30 per person includes entrance fees and refreshments. Children under 8 free.

Tuesday, March 31st & Wednesday, April 1st 9:30am – 12:30pm

Meet Elizabeth Bell at the fountain/Central Park for a cultural tour including Antigua’s history and contemporary life with the city’s art, architecture, history, descriptions of velaciones and carpet making. We highlight the Palace of City Hall, Palace of the Captains General, Cathedral with its ruins, Jade Museum and Paseo de los Museos at Casa Santo Domingo.

$30 per person includes entrance fees and refreshments. Children under 8 free.

Holy Wednesday, April 1st 1:30pm – 5pm San Mateo Milpas Altas Processional Tour

Located about 5 miles from Antigua, this “pueblo” procession is a contrast to the larger Antigua processions for Semana Santa and will give you a sense of how Semana Santa evolved over the centuries throughout Guatemala. Bring your camera!.

1:30pm Meet at Hotel Sor Juana (4a Calle Oriente #45) in Antigua for a shared shuttle to San Mateo Milpas Altas (15 minutes). Walk to the Central Park to view the 3pm procession of Jesus of Nazareth and the Virgin Mary carried on the shoulders of cucuruchos and women carriers. Feel the humble nature of this authentic procession as you intermingle with the faithful locals. 4:30pm Drive back to Hotel Sor Juana in Antigua (15 minutes) .

$40 per person includes shuttle and local host and translator for the activities

Maundy Thursday, April 2nd 9:30am – 12:30pm

Meet Elizabeth Bell at the fountain/Central Park for a cultural tour including Antigua’s history and contemporary life, the city’s art, architecture and carpet making. We focus on the main sites and beautiful carpet making in progress for today’s processions. Complete the tour at the San Francisco Church.

$30 per person includes entrance fees and refreshments. Children under 8 free.

Special Good Friday, April 3rd 6:00am – 8:30am

Meet Elizabeth Bell at the fountain/Central Park for a cultural introduction to the carpets and processions and view the most spectacular carpet making along the processional route. We see the La Merced procession and complete the tour near La Merced Church.

$30 per person includes entrance fees and refreshments. Children under 8 free.

Saturday, April 4th 9:30am – 12:30pm

Meet Elizabeth Bell at the fountain/Central Park for a cultural tour of Antigua’s main sites focusing on the city’s art, architecture, history and cultural trends with information about today’s women’s processions. We highlight the Palace of City Hall and Palace of the Captains General, Cathedral, Jade Museum and Paseo de los Museos at Casa Santo Domingo.

About Elizabeth Bell

Elizabeth BellElizabeth Bell, a resident of Antigua since 1969, born in Burlingame, California, grew up in Palo Alto, and moved to Antigua at the age of 14. She is a graduate of the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, holding a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. She completed her Master of Arts (ABT) at the University of Washington, majoring in Latin American history and historiography.

She received with the Guatemalan government’s highest award – the Gold Award “Diego de Porres” by the National Council for the Protection of La Antigua Guatemala on December 1st, 2011 for “her tireless efforts during 42 years in providing useful information about La Antigua Guatemala through her multiple books and lectures and her constant efforts in the preservation of the City and its Cultural Heritage”.
