All Saints’ Day
Guatemala celebrates All Saints’ Day and the Day of the Dead today. One of the finest celebrations is in Sumpango where local groups create giant kites that are more than 15 feet across. These all have very special designs and are flown by local group teams, while the Maya give special tribute to their deceased family members in the local cemetery. The technique of making the giant kites of Sumpango was inscribed in 2024 by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
7:30am Meet your expert guide at the Antigua Tours Park Office (inside Café Condesa/Central Park) for a private one-hour drive to Sumpango Sacatepéquez. A
short walk takes you to the special designated area where you may interact with the kite fliers and makers; enjoy the fantastic kite designs close–up as the Mayas honor their ancestors through kite-flying.
