About in Chichicastenango
The town is lying on the crests of mountaintops at an altitude of 7,000 ft. and is located about three hours from Antigua or Guatemala City. It is home to what is surely the most colorful native market in Central America. The famous handicraft market of Chichicastenango draws not only the K’iche’ Maya but vendors from all over Guatemala.
Another major attraction is the colonial church of Santo Tomas next to the market. The steps originally to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization remain venerated. Shamans (Mayan spiritual leaders) still use it for their rituals, burning incense and candles.
